MEET THE ARTIST: Acanthus Jewelry

Some jewelry feels newly made. Other jewelry feels discovered—as though it carries a history long before it reaches you. The work of Acanthus belongs to the latter. Rich with symbolism, texture, and old-world romance, each piece feels like a small artifact meant to be worn close. Behind the collection is artist Nichole McIver, a self-taught jeweler with a background in two-dimensional studio art and art history. She creates every piece by hand in her home studio in Central Minnesota, bringing together scholarship, intuition, and meticulous craftsmanship in equal measure.

Nichole draws inspiration from precious historical objects and the decorative language of the past, from the scrolling foliage found in illuminated manuscripts to the secret symbolism of Victorian mourning jewelry. Even the name Acanthus references the enduring ornamental leaf motif that has appeared across centuries of architecture and design, a symbol of beauty, growth, and continuity.

That sense of history is present in every detail. Oxidized silver, 14k gold, and 24k gold are layered with gemstones such as moonstone, diamond, and the singular beauty of dendritic agate. Metal is formed by hand, stones are individually set, and delicate gold imagery is painstakingly cut and placed, revealing the unmistakable hand of the maker in each finished work.

One of our favorite examples of Nichole’s storytelling is her collection of one-of-a-kind dendritic agate charms. No two stones are quite alike. Naturally occurring mineral inclusions create intricate, almost landscape-like patterns within the agate, and Nichole works with those markings to create tiny worlds and scenes inside each stone.

Some charms feature an owl perched on a branch. Others reveal a waxing moon. Rather than simply choosing a gemstone for its color or sparkle, Nichole lets each stone become part of the design, incorporating its natural markings into a miniature story.

Her newest charms might be our favorites yet: moths flying beneath a full moon, set against the dreamy, organic patterns of dendritic agate and moonstone. Each is completely unique, and there is something wonderfully serendipitous about discovering the little scene hidden inside the stone. They feel less like something manufactured and more like something unearthed, a tiny moment in time waiting to be found.

There is an intimacy to Acanthus jewelry that sets it apart. Crescent moons, sacred hearts, celestial stars, serpents, hands, and hidden emblems invite personal interpretation. These are pieces chosen not only for beauty, but for meaning, modern talismans that allow the wearer to create their own story.
